Diving in North Moluccas
The Moluccas are also known as the Spice Islands, famous for the precious spices that began a colonial tug-of-war between the 1500s and 1700s and sent explorers off to search for new lands to conquer. This area is divided into two provinces, with North Maluku majority Muslim and Christians generally living in the central and southern regions. As you travel through you’ll be dazzled by the variety of cultures and attractions to explore in this tropical hideaway. Ambon Island is home to the capital and is beloved by divers for the critters you can spot here, it is not dissimilar to the famous Lambeh Strait. Volcanic Halmahera Island is a pristine wilderness, surprisingly unexplored and home to dive sites that include walls and pinnacles and great muck diving. Neighboring Morotai is fantastic for wreck diving thanks to the World War Two Jeeps, tanks and planes that found their way to the bottom of the sea in these most strategic of islands.
Then there is Ternate, the tiny northern island with its soft coral, walls, slopes and rock formations, not to mention the sea fans and great variety of marine creatures. The dry season in the central and southern areas of this province are different to elsewhere in Indonesia, with the dry season running from October to March.
