Diving the Baa Atoll

In 2011, the amount and variety of underwater life around the Baa Atoll was recognized and given UNESCO Reserve status. The area has over 1,200 types of reef fish and over 250 species of coral, the most in all of the Indian Ocean. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is a well-known breeding ground for grey and whale sharks. It is also famous for its manta ray feeding frenzies, which can be seen from around May until December. Other popular and well-known sites for diving and snorkeling include Horubadhoo Thila, Dhonfanu Thila, and Nelivaru Haa.
