1. Dos Ojos

The best-known of all the underwater caves in Mexico, Cenote Dos Ojos is an expansive labyrinth with stunning rock formations and crystal-clear waters. The name "Two Eyes" refers to two large sinkholes that serve as entrances to this system, leading divers into tunnels with visibility reaching up to 100 meters (328 feet).

In 2018, the smaller Sistema Dos Ojos was merged with the Sac Actun system, making it one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world. Decorations of Stalactites and stalagmites adorn much of the system, creating striking visuals. Dos Ojos also has intricate passages that require precise buoyancy control.

2. The Pit (El Pit)

Cenote El Pit is a deep cenote with incredible visibility, often considered one of the more advanced technical dives in Mexico. The entry is dramatic, and divers descend into a layer of hydrogen sulfide, which creates a surreal, misty effect. 

The hydrogen sulfide cloud at around 30 meters (98 feet) creates an eerie visual effect, and the cave’s immense chambers require proper navigation and gas management.

  • Depth: 121 meters (397 feet)

3. Nohoch Nah Chich

Nohoch Nah Chich (Giant Birdcage) extends for 67 kilometers (42 miles) and has thousands of meters of tunnels with beautiful features and halocline layers. The halocline layers create a shimmering effect in the water. 

Famous for the Blue Abyss, a huge vertical shaft within the Nohoch system, this geological feature descends to a depth of approximately 70 meters (233 feet), making it the deepest known point in the system. 

Discovered and initially explored in the early 1990s, the Hohoch Nah Chich has since attracted technical divers worldwide, offering a challenging and awe-inspiring experience. The journey to this site typically involves navigating through shallow, intricately decorated passages, culminating in the dramatic drop-off of the abyss.

  • Depth: 71 meters (233 feet).

4. Ox Bel Ha

Translating to "Three Waterways," Ox Bel Ha has more than 496 kilometers (308 miles) of passages. This extensive cave system offers complex navigational challenges and stunning cave formations, but it is suitable only for experienced cave divers. Its immense size, mix of tight passages, and large chambers adorned with impressive stalactites make this an exceptional dive site.

Ox Bel Ha is a prime example of a coastal cave system, characterized by a distinct layering of freshwater and saltwater. The freshwater layer, which flows actively, sits atop a nearly stagnant saltwater layer intruding from the nearby Caribbean Sea

This stratification creates a halocline, a visually and physically distinct mixing zone between the two layers due to their different densities. The depth of the halocline varies, typically increasing as the cave extends further from the ocean.

5. Tajma Ha

Cenote Tajma Ha is one of the most famous underwater caves in Mexico, known for its spectacular light displays. Named by divers after the impressive Taj Mahal because of its beauty and the happy coincidence that "ha" in Mayan means "water". 

The Sunbeams penetrate the water and illuminate the cavern during certain times of the day. This system features a maze of tunnels and huge chambers, plus halocline effects and intricate formations. All of which makes it a favorite among divers.

Dive Conditions in Mexico’s Caves

The underwater caves in Mexico have great visibility, often exceeding 30 meters (100 feet) in many systems. However, this visibility can be affected by haloclines, creating a blurring effect that requires extra care when negotiating them. The water temperature in the cenotes and caves is usually stable, around 25°C (77°F), making it comfortable for extended dives.

As these caves are filled with intricate passages and delicate cave formations, the dive environment requires careful buoyancy control to avoid stirring up silt or damaging formations. Silt can reduce visibility drastically, especially in the narrower passageways, so divers must have excellent trim and finning techniques.

Best Time for Diving the Underwater Caves in Mexico

Mexico’s cenotes can be dived all year and are generally unaffected by adverse weather conditions. However, December to April is the dry season in the Yucatán, so there is less chance of rain washing silt and debris into the cenotes. 

While cave diving is possible year-round, the rainy season from May to October can sometimes affect visibility and accessibility, especially in the more open cenotes.
